The British woman undercover journalist was captured in Afghanistan and suspected spying - an offence which carries the mandatory death penalty.
Yvonne Ridley, 43, a journalist for the Sunday Express, had a camera and rolls of film hidden in the head-to-toe Afghan burqa she wore as a disguise. She also had a mobile phone capable of making and receiving calls to and from Britain and other Western countries.
The British Foreign Office was told that she is being questioned by Taleban intelligence service chiefs for possible espionage.
