"The campaign of the Zimbabwe Association of Crime Prevention and Rehabilitation (Zacro) for the abolition of the death penalty (it started in 1993 ndr) is continuing and slowly, people are beginning to respond. Some are for abolition while others are against," said Samuel Muyambo, the Zacro chief executive officer."We have realised that attitudes towards the death penalty are entrenched and people need time to reflect on it," Muyambo said.Muyambo says the death sentence shifts the burden of restitution to the surviving family members of the condemned prisoner who have to appease the avenging spirits, called ngozi."The ngozi haunts surviving members despite the fact that the condemned prisoner would have suffered the supreme punishment," Muyambo said.
