The Central African Republic's state prosecutor, Joseph Bindoumi, called for the death penalty for former military ruler Andre Kolingba, three of his children and 19 other associates tried in absentia over a failed coup last year. More than 600 people, most of them soldiers, were accused of trying to overthrow President Ange Felix Patasse in May 2001. The uprising was put down with the help of Libyan troops. Some 80 more people who were detained after the coup attempt have been on trial since February, though the court has decided to try them separately from the hundreds of people who were tried in absentia.
