The Court of Cassation in Amman overturned seven death sentences passed against Ra'id Hijazi and six other men allegedly affiliated with Al-Qa'idah network, convicted in two separate trials in 2003 and 2000, their lawyer said on July 3.
The State Security Court sentenced to death Hijazi, a 34-year-old American Jordanian, in January for conspiring to bomb tourist sites frequented by US and Israeli targets during New Year's celebrations in Jordan.
The six others were convicted in September 2000 of possessing explosive devices and weapons to attack Christian religious sites in Jordan.
A nine-judge Court of Cassation panel overturned both State Security Court verdicts on 15 June and 24 June, returning the cases to State Security Court, according to Jalal Darwish, one of a number of attorneys defending the group and Hijazi.
"The judges decided unanimously to overturn Hijazi's verdict because the State Security Court violated court procedures. So they returned the case to the State Court for reconsideration," Darwish told The Jordan Times.
