The Criminal Court convicted Esbat al-Ansar leader Ahmed Abdel-Karim Saadi in absentia on charges of inciting a follower to carry out an assassination attempt.
Saadi, better known as Abu Mohjen, was initially condemned to death but his sentence was later reduced to 20 years hard labor.
Judge George Ghantous presided over the court which also sentenced Ziad Amin Chehabi, who is currently in police custody, to death for the 1994 assassination attempt of a Palestinian man named Amin Kayed. Chehabi's sentence was later reduced to five years hard labor.
According to the court's ruling, the assassination attempt had been the result of ideological differences between Abu Mohjen's followers and a Palestinian man named Amin Kayed.
Chehabi was assigned to murder Kayed and, with the help of a man named Mohammed Omar, threw a hand grenade at Kayed's residence in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp near Sidon. No one was killed, although the attack caused material damage.
