The Czech Foreign Ministry received an official Norwegian note requesting that the Czech Republic extradite detained Uzbek dissident Mukhammed Salikh to Norway where he had been granted asylum, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ales Pospisil told CTK.
The note is now being studied by the Justice Ministry, he added.
According to Pospisil, Norway's interest will be crucial for Prague's decision on Salikh's fate. Salikh's extradition to Uzbekistan, where he is wanted for his alleged criminal activities, is far less probable now, Pospisil said. In Uzbekistan he could face even death penalty, according to observers.
Salikh was detained on his arrival at the Prague airport on the basis of a warrant issued for his arrest by Interpol at Tashkent's initiative.
