The European Parliament Foreign Affairs Commission evaluated the project Report on the Global Human Rights Situation (the Van den Bos report), voting on almost 300 amendments put forward by different parties.
The Commission approved by a large majority many of the amendments presented by the Radical Party parliamentarians, and, in particular, took up the request for the adoption of a universal moratorium on executions at the next UN General Assembly.
The Commission also agreed to the Radical amendment on the Montagnards, "inviting the Vietnamese government to put an end to the politics of oppression and extermination," that on the United Buddhist Church of Vietnam, inviting the Vietnamese government to "adopt immediate and concrete provisions to guarantee religious freedom and the respect for fundamental rights" in the country, and that on the repression exercised by the Laos authorities against fundamental rights, the Hmong population and Christians in the country.
The Foreign Commission adopted the Radical request for the inclusion of clear and incontrovertible mechanisms which would lead to the suspension of cooperation agreements with third countries in case of violations of articles relating to human rights.
