The European Union called on Armenia to sign Protocol 13 to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, repealing the death penalty under any circumstances, the EU said in a declaration published in Rome and Brussels in connection with the ratification by the Armenian National Assembly of Protocol 6 to the European Convention on the repeal of the death penalty. The Italian embassy in Armenia told Arminfo news agency that the declaration pointed out that the decision of the Armenian National Assembly to ratify Protocol 6 has de jure excluded the death penalty from the Armenian legal system and allowed the republic to fulfil one of its commitments to the Council of Europe.
