The families of those killed in June knife killings at Ikeda Elementary School in Osaka Prefecture presented prosecutors with a petition of about 620,000 names calling for defendant Mamoru Takuma to be executed, the families said.
Eight children were stabbed to death in the attack. Starting in August, the families collected signatures over the Internet for the petition, which demands the indictment and execution of Takuma, 37. Parents and teachers cooperated in the effort.
On September 15, Takuma was indicted on charges of murder and attempted murder after psychiatrists concluded he was mentally competent at the time of the killings, though his initial behaviour suggested he was mentally unstable.
