The Federal Court of Malaysia commuted the death sentence imposed on K. Saravanan, a 24 year old factory worker convicted of trafficking in 2,279.9gm of cannabis and instead jailed him for 15 years and ordered that he be given 10 strokes of the cane on an amended charge of possessing the drug.
Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Haidar Mohamed Noor, sitting with Federal Court judges Datuk Abdul Malik Ahmad and Datuk Siti Norma Yaakob, ordered Saravanan to serve his sentence with effect from the day he was arrested, on September 16, 1998 at age 18.
The Ipoh High Court had sentenced Saravanan to death on March 21, 2000, when it found him guilty of trafficking in the cannabis at Taman Klebang in Chemor.
On March 7, 2002, the Court of Appeal upheld the conviction.
