The Financial Gazette described the Public Order and Security Bill (POSB) as a "nefarious piece of legislation."
"The POSB, under which Mugabe could outlaw the opposition, intends to jail Zimbabweans for publishing or making statements which attack Mugabe and his actions and wants to impose the death sentence on those accused of sponsoring so-called terrorism.
"Put differently, Mugabe no longer needs to formally declare a state of emergency - as he has always wanted to do - because these new laws effectively give him the sweeping powers of martial law which he needs."
