The former head of the Minsk detention centre, Aleh Alkayew, revealed the circumstances behind the reports linking high-ranking officials to the disappearance of prominent opposition figures. Interviewed in hiding, Alkayew confirmed that interior officials borrowed a pistol used for executions in suspicious circumstances just before the disappearances. He said the authorities may have passed death sentences on their opponents and used the pistol to give an air of execution to murder.
