The former vice governor of China's south-western province of Yunnan, Li Jiating, was given a suspended death sentence for bribery, the official Xinhua news agency reported. Li had been convicted of taking 18.1 million yuan ($2.2 million) in bribes between 1994 and 2000 when he was deputy party boss and vice governor of Yunnan. The penalty was suspended for two years and China often commutes such sentences into life in jail.
