The German foreign ministry said that it was urgently trying to contact eight aid workers accused by the Taliban of spreading Christianity among Afghans.
Officials in Berlin said they had no communication with the eight, who are being tried by Taliban judges, since satellite telephone links stopped working on October 24.
Four of the eight are German, two are American and two are Australian. The offence of spreading Christianity can be punished with the death sentence under Taliban law.
The Pakistani lawyer for the group, who was hired by their employer, Shelter Now Germany, submitted a defence in their case before leaving Kabul on the 24th.
The German press reported that the German special forces, the KSK, might be deployed in Afghanistan partly to attempt a rescue of the aid workers.
