The Grand National Party (GNP) announced that its special investigation group sent to China to probe diplomatic mishaps regarding the execution of a Korean national named Shin and imprisonment of three others, had uncovered more mistakes made by different organs of the government, and not just the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT).
The GNP said its team had found out that right after the arrest of the Koreans involved, the embassy in Beijing requested their deportation after their trials.
In response to this the Chinese Police Authorities sent a letter in January 1998 to the Korean government requesting confirmation of the identities of the four. The request was sent by MOFAT to the Daegu Prosecutors Office by way of the National Police Agency, as the four were residents there, but no reply was received.
Heilungjing Province prosecutors asked the Korean government via the Korean embassy to select lawyers for the accused in February 1998, but it failed to reply to China, merely forwarding letters on to the defendant's families.
China notified the government on the progress of the trials at least eight times since September 1997 through the Beijing embassy, however over the four-year period, every time there was a reshuffle of ambassador, consul general and consul, the incoming diplomat was not appraised of the situation, according to the GNP team.
