The Grand National Party urged the resignation of the cabinet en bloc after the disgraceful diplomatic incident in which the government wrongly accused China of not giving prior notice before executing a Korean national.
Jang Gwang-geun, chief assistant spokesman for the opposition, insisted that the incompetent and weak cabinet line-up must be replaced with experts in each specialized field to form an emergency neutral cabinet.
GNP Secretary General Kim Ki-bae also condemned the government, saying that not realizing a Korean national was being executed abroad was equivalent to a state of anarchy. He urged the president to resign from the top post in the ruling Millennium Democratic Party to concentrate on state affairs.
Lee Jae-oh, floor leader of the GNP, also demanded the resignation of cabinet members, especially the foreign minister, and also the ambassador to China at the time of the incident.
The United Liberal Democrats also released a statement by spokesman Jeong Jin-seok, urging the government to carry out a through investigation on the course of events, and to reprimand those who were responsible for the incident.
