The Thalassery Additional District and Sessions Court awarded death sentences to five CPM activists for the murder of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha Vice-president K T Jayakrishnan in 1999. Jayakrishnan was murdered on 1 December, 1999 at the Mokeri East Upper Primary School near Thalassery after a group activists barged into his class room and stabbed him to death in full view of his students. Pradeepan, 32, Sundaran, 40, Shaji, 30, Dinesh Babu, 29, and KK Anil Kumar, 32, were all sentenced to death by hanging by the court. For the last two decades, two cadre-based parties, the CPM and the RSS, have been engaged in a bloody battle in Kannur.
