The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) decried the effect of the Sharia legal code introduced in some Northern states of the country, saying that the implementation of Sharia was particularly unfavourable to women. FIDA's Nigerian Vice President, Veronica Odunuga said that "In the three cases of conviction for adultery which attracted public interest since the introduction, the women were convicted while their male associates were discharged with ease_ FIDA Nigeria condemns the extension of the Sharia Code from issues of personal law to criminal issues especially those attracting capital punishment. FIDA Nigeria also condemns the indictment, and conviction of Amina Lawal for adultery and death sentence imposed on her."
