The Sharia Court in Birnin-Kebbi sentenced 35-year-old Attahiru Umaru to death by stoning for forcibly having anal sex with a seven-year-old boy in the Zamfara state capital.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the trial lasted only 20 minutes, following the confession by Umaru to the court that he had forcibly molested the child the previous week, while he was sleeping. Umaru begged for leniency.
The trial judge, Alhaji Abubakar Bena, ruled that the court would not grant him leniency as his crime, according to the Sharia legal system, was a capital one and, therefore, sentenced him to death.
The judge, however, informed the convict that he could appeal within 30 days of the judgment, which was to be sent to the Sharia Implementation Committee for ratification and execution.
It was the first time that a death sentence was passed on any accused person under the Sharia legal system.
