the International Secretariat of the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) was informed by the Sudan Organisation Against Torture (SOAT), that 30 individuals, including a minor, were sentenced to death by hanging by Sudan’s Special Courts for their alleged involvement in the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) May 10th attacks on Omdurman. The OMCT is concerned that these individuals may be executed after trial proceedings that failed to meet international standards of fair trials. Moreover, OMCT is strongly preoccupied by reports of torture and ill-treatment in detention. OMCT wishes to recall that according to international rules, any statement which is established to have been made as result of torture shall not be invoked as evidence in any proceedings.
