The Koper District Court rejected Turkey's request for the extradition of Naci Muzaffer Oeztuerk, a 42-year old Swiss citizen of Turkish origin who had been jailed in Koper since July 17, 2000. Oeztuerk was arrested by Slovene police at the Starod border crossing on an international warrant issued by an Istanbul court. He was wanted on charges of murder, complicity to murder and an armed attack on a police station in Turkey. The Slovene court ruled that extradition requirements could not be met due to a lack of evidence and Oeztuerk was released. If he had been handed over to Turkey, he would have faced death penalty.
