The Lithuanian parliament ratified an extradition treaty with China regulating the handing over of persons to another country for criminal amenability or a jail term. The agreement stipulates conditions according to which a person accused of a crime could be extradited to a different country. Yet, in the words of Lithuania's Justice Ministry officials, Lithuania will have the option of defaulting on the treaty if it runs counter the country's international obligations - for instance, if the person to be extradited could be sentenced to death. Unlike China, Lithuania has banned capital punishment. Lithuania has also signed the extradition treaty with the United States, different states of which also have the death penalty. The agreement also stipulates exceptions, allowing the Baltic state to refuse the extradition of someone facing the death sentence.
