The National Society for Human Rights joined the call to Botswana President Festus Mogae to commute the death penalty imposed on Mariette Bosch to life imprisonment. NSHR spokesman Zen Mnakapa said: "We do not believe that capital punishment is an answer. Nor is it really in the best interest of the peace-loving Botswana people, let alone the broader world community. Simply, two human wrongs cannot make a right." His organisation joined the Botswana Centre for Human Rights in saying that death by hanging constituted a cruel and inhuman punishment. The NSHR also called on Botswana to ratify the Second Optional Protocol aiming to the abolition of the death penalty.
