The opposition People's National Congress said it would organise protest marches against what it termed "extra-judicial killings" by the Guyana Special Target Squad.
The PNC said that on July 26, elements of this squad, known locally as the Black Clothes Police, gunned down three young men at the corner of Mandela Avenue and East Bank Highway in full view of many citizens.
Guyana police alleged that they stopped a vehicle in which the men were travelling and the men jumped out and opened fire on them. Eyewitnesses however claimed that the police lined up the men and summarily executed them in cold blood.
