The Quezon City Regional Trial Court, the Philippines, sentenced eight men, including two Chinese, to death by lethal injection for abducting four Chinese children six years ago.
Those convicted were Antonio Tap, Banjamin Dy, Jonathan Braga, Eliseo Barredo and Wilmar Carian.
Vincent Vadol, Nestor Paflona and a certain Boy Muslim, who remain at large, were tried and convicted in absentia. Executive Judge Natividad Dizon ordered the convicts to pay P300,000 in moral damages and P100,000 in exemplary damages to the Ouyang siblings Kayla, 10, Benson, 13, and Benjie, 17.
Records showed gunmen aboard a car blocked the path of the van carrying the minors, their driver and nanny, in on October 26, 1998.
The children were taken to a safe house in Rizal while their driver and nanny were freed.
The minors were released after payment of P20 million in ransom on Espana Avenue, Manila.
The kidnappers were pursued, arrested and detained at Quezon City jail on Kamuning Road. Tan and Dy escaped on February 11, 2003 and abducted a man and a woman in Antipolo City, but were rearrested in April 2003.
