The Shanghai Higher People's Court sentenced Chen Tongbao to death for murder. It was alleged that Chen, an Anhui Province native, broke into an apartment on the night of 29 June 2002. When the owner, surnamed as Shen, arrived home unexpectedly, Chen struck him on the head with a stick. Shen later died from a brain injury. Chen made off with 1,700 yuan in cash and a cell phone.
