The Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court sentenced Zhang Ping to death penalty for murder and gave his ex-wife Shao Yuying seven years in prison for being an accomplice. It was reported that in 2001, Zhang and Shao came up with a plan to make their fortune ripping off insurance companies. They divorced in November 2002 after Zhang met a woman from another province. Zhang married the woman on 4 December 2002 and bought a life insurance worth 600,000 yuan on his new wife, the Shanghai Daily reported. On 15 January 2003, Zhang quarrelled with the woman and forced her to inhale liquefied gas. The woman died of suffocation. Zhang tried to make it look like she had died from a gas leak, "but police weren't fooled," the Daily reported.
