The shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court sentenced Zhang Limei to death, but gave her two years probation, for smuggling, selling and transporting drugs. Her two accomplices, Zhang Lili and He Juyan, were sentenced to life imprisonment for the same crimes. Chen Youfu, who bought drugs from them, was also sentenced to death with a probation of two years for drug dealing. It was reported that the four were arrested in June 2003 when police seized 450g of unspecified drugs from them as they were making a deal in Changning District.
