The state Supreme Court has overturned a death sentence given to 42-year-old Joseph Williams who fatally shot his girlfriend.
The court has ordered that he be given a life prison term instead.
Williams was convicted in June 2001 in the 1996 killing of 31-year-old Carol Mason. Williams' death sentence hinged on his felony-murder conviction. But the high court unanimously struck down that conviction, finding that Williams burglarized the home to kill Mason, not the other way around.
The court kept intact Williams' intentional-murder conviction, subjecting him to life in prison.
