The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals upheld the opinion of 24 jurors in 2 separate trials that Ricky Thompson, convicted in the 1989 shooting death of his 21-year-old wife, Nina Vann Thompson, should die in the state's death chamber. The Appellate Court reversed Designated Judge John K. Byers' 2002 order, which had found Thompson insane. The Appellate Court reinstated the convictions and death sentence for 1st degree murder. Thompson, now 52, has remained on death row since the trial and conviction in 2000. Thompson was convicted and sentenced to death in a 1992 trial and again in 2000 after he successfully appealed his first conviction.
