The Thai government lodged a formal complaint against the US' annual global human rights report, in which it described Thailand's record as having worsened in the past year. Much of the report's criticism focused on the government's anti-drugs campaign, during which some reports suggested that more than 2,000 people had died. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced that he had taken the criticism personally, described the US as a 'useless friend' and lambasted the report's authors for what he described as 'factual inaccuracies'.
