The Tokyo High Court overturned the death sentence against Kenji Chiba, a 56-year-old man, and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Chiba set fire to the house of Toshiko Imahashi, 71, in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, on March 1, 2000, following his divorce because he blamed the Imahashi family for introducing him to his ex-wife, according to the ruling.
As a result, Imahashi was burned to death, while her three family members sustained serious burns. Presiding Judge Toshio Yamada said, "It was a brutal crime, which may have killed all of the family members, but it is undeniable that the defendant was criminally insane and suffered from an obsessive-delusional disorder."
Chiba denied his intention to kill during the hearings at the Mito District Court. But the lower court ruled in March 2002 that it was an extremely brutal crime and sentenced him to death.
