The Trinidad and Tobago government will not be compensating the family of executed murderer Joey Ramiah, Attorney-General Glenda Morean told reporters.She said: "As far as the part of the judgment to which compensation was concerned, that question as to whether the decision is binding on our courts will have to be tested before we can determine whether we are compelled to adhere or not."
The IACHR had ordered that government pay 50,000 US dollars to the family for the future education and maintenance of Ramiah's son, Jonus, and also 10,000 US dollars to his mother as compensation for his execution while he had two matters pending before the court.Ramiah was one of nine people executed in 1999 for the murder of four members of a family in a rural village.
Morean said that the IACHR findings were based on cases that had been pending before the country withdrew from its jurisdiction in 1999. She said when Ramiah was executed he had no matters pending before the Inter-American Court in relation to the murders for which he was hanged.
