The U.S. State Department's annual human rights report criticised human rights abuses in Cameroon, accusing authorities in the Central African state of extrajudicial killings and mistreating prisoners. The report criticised special units created to tackle rising crime and singled out the "Operational Command" military unit operating in the commercial capital Douala. The report quoted the Roman Catholic archbishop of Douala, Cardinal Christian Tumi, as estimating the total number of extrajudicial killings carried out by the Operational Command to be as high as 500.
