The United Democratic Movement (UDM) called on the South African government to reconsider the death penalty before vigilantism overtook the justice system.
"The UDM is making a clarion call to government to revisit the question of death penalty before vigilantism takes over the justice system," spokesman Max Mhlati said.He claimed that criminals had been conducting door-to-door robberies at Payne administrative area near Umtata since Easter.
"Criminals have taken charge of the country and the ANC is standing by watching helplessly despite the abundance of arms and resources at their disposal," Mhlati said.
Umtata police spokeswoman Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta said she was unaware of the door-to-door robberies at Payne that Mhlati claimed were taking place and said crime was "normal" in Payne.
