The upper house of the Kazakh parliament, the Senate, approved amendments to legislation on combating terrorism. The draft amendments were earlier backed by the lower house, and the document has been submitted to the president for signing.
The draft envisions tighter sanctions for all manifestations of terrorism. Attempts on the lives of individuals made with the aim of intimidating or blackmailing state officials, as well as attempts on the lives of state and public figures, will be punishable by imprisonment of ten to twenty years or by the death sentence, which can be replaced by life imprisonment.
