the Vice Mayor of Qingdao, a coastal city in East China's Shandong Province, was sentenced to death for taking bribes worth 4.96 million yuan (599,000 US dollars). Wang Yan was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in the Court of First Instance and all his property confiscated.
It was reported that from May, 1999 to September, 2003, while holding government posts in Qindao's Laoshan District, Wang accepted bribes from 14 units or individuals on 24 occasions in exchange for leasing local land property rights and local village renovation.
So far, only 370,000 yuan (44,700 US dollars) of illicit money had been retrieved.
He was arrested on October 31, 2004.
