The youngest son of Indonesia's former president Suharto was charged with murder over the killing of a Supreme Court judge.
Hutomo Mandala Putra, known as Tommy, faces a possible death sentence if he is found guilty of the murder of justice Syafiuddin Kartasmita, according to court dossiers.
The former millionaire playboy is accused of involvement in the murder of Syafiuddin, the judge who sentenced him in September 2000 to 18 months in jail on graft charges.
That trial was seen as symbolic of efforts to reform Indonesia's legal system. The Suharto clan became a symbol for the graft and corruption blamed for the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 in Indonesia.
Yet so far, few figures from the Suharto era have faced trial for either corporate or human rights abuses. Tommy was recaptured in November 2001 after fleeing capture soon after his conviction.
Syafiuddin was shot dead by four men on motorcycles. Four men currently in police custody have allegedly confessed to being hired killers, though it is unclear whether they will be tried for the killing.
