There were no people sentenced to death in Belarus, chief of the Belarussian Interior Ministry's department of corrections Vladimir Kovchur told reporters. Commenting on a report by the US bureau of Amnesty International, Kovchur said "the death penalty is applied in exceptional cases, like against sadists responsible for five or six killings."
"The death penalty was applied more actively in the past, but later we have had one or two cases a year," Kovchur said.
"There have been no executions this year, and nobody is even on death row," he said.
