Three Iranian MPs wrote to the head of the judiciary calling for the freeing of Afsaneh Noruzi, a young woman sentenced to death for killing a man who was attempting to rape her, press reports said.
The three female reformist members of parliament - Jamileh Kadivar, Azam Taleghani and Tahereh Rezazadeh - told Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi that the condemned woman had merely "carried out her human and Islamic duty by defending her honour as a Muslim woman."
In 1997, Noruzi stabbed to death a police officer on the Gulf island of Kish, alleging that the man had attempted to rape her in his office.
It was reported that she had been sentenced to death in March 2003 and that the supreme court confirmed the sentence, although Hands Off Cain had no reports of the initial death sentence.
The MPs asked for the dossier to be passed to an "experienced judge", and emphasised the fact that the woman had several children.
