Three Nigerian police officers were sentenced to death for burning five people alive after robbing them at gunpoint. The High Court in the central town of Lokoja sentenced the three who were charged with robbing seven traders of 1.5 million naira ($13,550) with which the victims had intended to buy rams to be slaughtered for the Muslim Eid festival. Many Nigerians blame police for a sharp increase in violent robbery since military rule ended in the populous West African nation in 1999.
