Three Palestinians and an Israeli soldier were killed in a gun battle that the Israeli army said was an ambush by gunmen but which Palestinian officials called a "pure execution" of Palestinian wounded.
There were conflicting accounts of the fighting near the West Bank city of Nablus which prompted a call by the Palestinian Authority for an international investigation.
The Israeli army said troops shot dead three "Palestinian terrorists" who opened fire at an army jeep. But the Palestinian Authority and the Red Crescent ambulance service accused Israeli soldiers of killing the men as they lay wounded after medical crews arrived to treat them. The army, which lost an officer in the exchange, called the allegations "absolutely baseless".
