Two Iranian drug smugglers were sentenced to death and four to life in jail in Saudi Arabia after they set fire to their boat loaded with nearly a tonne of hashish during a police chase at sea, Gulf News said. Dubai's court of first instance sentenced the Iranians, who were not named, to death for possession, smuggling and trafficking in drugs, arson and endangering life, it was reported. The six men, caught after a tip-off, were charged with smuggling more than 810 kilos of hashish and deliberately starting a fire on the boat. The smugglers nearly died and had to be rescued by helicopter off the coast of Dubai after lobbing petrol bombs at police who boarded the vessel, sparking the blaze. Police recovered 770 kilos of hashish. The rest sank with the ship.
