Two men believed to be among the world's biggest drug barons were extradited to stand trial for allegedly smuggling cannabis into the US. They were escorted from Sydney by US marshals after Australia agreed to extradite the pair on the condition Texas authorities would not seek the death penalty.
The pair, Spaniard Rios Francisco Balderamma, 32, and Mexican Armando Eduardo Quiroz, 33, had busted out of Sydney's Parklea jail and led police on a three-week chase before they were caught in Victoria in September 2001. Texas authorities accuse the duo of leading Mexico's Ojinaga drug cartel, which was allegedly responsible for importing 62 tonnes of cannabis into the US since 1996.
They were described by US officials as the Pablo Escobars of marijuana, and until their capture were on the US Drug Enforcement Agency's top-10 most-wanted list. Both men travelled to Sydney in September 2000 to watch a boxing match at the Olympics and were arrested at Sydney airport on their way home after a tip-off from US authorities.
They have been accused of money laundering, drug-running and being linked to three deaths.
