Two Nigerians who converted to Christianity nearly met their maker sooner than they anticipated. Islamic followers in the Zamfara State in the north of the country were so perturbed at having lost two members to Christ's flock that they applied for them to be sentenced to death.
The Sharia court in Mada rejected the application by the state's Sharia Monitoring Group but said if a law banning religious conversion existed they wouldn't hesitate to pass the death sentence.
"No portion of the penal code 2000 recommends the death penalty for changing one's religion but if there were such a provision I wouldn't hesitate to pass the death penalty," said Sharia judge Awal Jabaka.
He recommended that the concerned members who filed the application take their concerns to the Zamfara State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to amend the law.
The Christians Lawali Yakubu and Ja'afaru Ali Mohammed denied deserting Islam, saying they had always been followers of Jesus.
As the pair was leaving the court a group of overzealous Muslim youths tried to attack them but they were quickly whisked away by members of the Christian Association of Nigeria.
