Two senior executives of real estate companies were each given a death sentence with a two-year reprieve and life imprisonment by the Beijing No 1 Intermediate Court.
The court found Yin Yuanqing, former manager of the Beijing Jinding Real Estate Development Co., and Wang Xudong, former vice-manager of the Beijing Urban and Township Housing Construction and Development Co. guilty of embezzlement.
Yin allegedly embezzled 2.17m yuan of public money and accepted 920,000 yuan in illicit money, along with 120,000-yuan-worth of gifts. Wang was convicted as a co-conspirator in the case.
The court said that Yin used his power to entrust Wang with a false housing construction project contract in 1998, through which they embezzled 2.15m yuan. Yin also took bribes in the form of cash, a laptop computer and DVD player from other project contractors.
