the death penalty should not be applied in Uganda to people convicted of treason. The recommendation was made by residents of Buyobe Parish, Kayunga sub-county, while giving their views on the White Paper to their MP, Ms Sarah Nansubuga, at Buwungiro Primary School. They argued that in African countries, governments concocted treason charges against opposition politicians in order to suppress them.
"Whereas it is good to maintain the death penalty, it should not be applied on treason convicts because they are in most cases innocent," Samuel Ssentongo said. He said the death penalty was good because it eliminated dangerous people from society such as armed robbers and defilers.
