a Ugandan woman who allegedly murdered her husband lost her appeal in the Supreme Court. Susan Kigula Sseremba was convicted together with her maid, Patience Nansamba, of the murder of Constantine Sseremba in 2000. The two were sentenced to death. However, the court ruled that their execution should wait for the constitutional petition on the death sentence. "The appeal against the conviction by the appellants is dismissed. The sentence of death imposed upon the appellants is suspended pending the determination of the constitutional appeal concerning the sentence," the judgment read.
The Chief Justice, Benjamin Odoki, who read the judgment, chaired the panel. The other members on the panel were justices John Wilson Tsekooko, Joseph Mulenga, George William Kanyeihamba and Bart Katureebe. Kigula and Sseremba had three children, their eldest aged four years.
The four-year-old testified that he witnessed his mother cutting his father's neck with a panga, while the maid, Nansamba, held the legs on July 9, 2000.
The Supreme Court said it was satisfied that the lower court properly evaluated the evidence on record and correctly found the child's evidence sufficient.
