Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni pardoned Abdallah Nasur, a governor under former military ruler Idi Amin of the then Central Province. Nasur was sentenced to death in 1979 for the 1972 murder of the mayor of Masaka.
The announcement that President Museveni had pardoned and ordered the release of a pillar of the Idi Amin administration has been met with mixed feelings. It came at a time when the debate about capital punishment needs to be focused in view of the work of the Constitution Review Commission that is taking in views on contentious elements of the national constitution.
