US President George Bush asked European Union leaders to consider a range of new measures to fight terrorism, including improvements to border controls and transportation safety, officials said.
EU and US government officials said the President made the requests in a classified letter to European Commission President Romano Prodi and Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt.
President Bush listed about 50 measures ranging from efforts to uncover companies acting as fronts for terrorists to helping former Soviet republics control movements of nuclear, chemical or biological material. An EU spokesman, Jonathan Faull, said the EU was in the process of adopting some of the measures. Others raised difficulties.
EU nations - which have abolished the death penalty - are adamant they won't send suspects to the United States if they risk being executed.
